Credit Card giant Mastercard earlier this week announced it was implementing a worldwide ban on customers placing adult ads on Backpage. The site has long come under fire from authorities in the US, where sex work is illegal in most states, for promoting prostitution.
But Mastercard only made its decision after Sheriff Tom Dart from Cook County in Illinois wrote to the company, calling on it to stop processing Backpage. The ripple effect from that decision has spread globally, with local sex industry representatives saying thousands of legal Australian sex workers are affected.
The Scarlet Alliance, which speaks on behalf of sex workers, said Backpage. Some sex workers likened it to Google or Yellow Pages suddenly banning tradesmen from placing listings with their respective businesses. Sydney sex worker Lucie Bee said banning credit card payments did not address the problem it was targeting — to stamp out illegal sex work and trafficking.
